Kojoe (ko-jo) was born Sakata Koichiro in Niigata, Japan. Despite having a language barrier, Kojoe’s dual rhyming style, in Japanese and in English, has pierced multicultural barriersand piqued the interests of various listening audiences. His provocative approach and stylehas enabled the Japanese music industry and fans to become objective listeners amidst aforeign dominated, and J-Pop saturated market.

Kojoe was the 1st Asian artist signed to Rawkus Records in 2007, for his skillful Japaneseflow. Rawkus Records was responsible for launching the careers of artists such as: Mos Defand Talib Kweli. After living in New York for 13 years and absorbing American English, Kojoedeveloped his English and Japanese rhyming skills. Upon returning to Japan in 2009, Kojoefinished his national debut album “Mixed Identities 2.0,” to be released on his label OnRecords of Nagoya, Japan. The mixtapes, “Kojoe Tuesdays: Volumes 1 & 2” were createdfrom a 4-month digital download campaign to market him in Japan and overseas, featuringvarious Japanese emcees, producers, and American artists.

Kojoe is garnering international acclaim due to his “never-been-attempted“ linguisticallydexterous style that supersedes most Japanese emcees. Artists that Kojoe has collaboratedwith in Japan include Dabo, Big Joe, Seeda, 4WD, and producers YMG, OTOWA Beats, andOhld, along with Raekwon , Talib Kweli, Styles P., Smif-n-Wessun, and producers J. Cardim,D. Focis, and Streets from the USA.

Kojoe has many firsts. He is the 1st Asian artist signed to Rawkus Records. He’s featured onthe 1st Japanese Hip Hop mixtape released in the USA featuring all Japanese artists, “NewTokyo 2 Mixtape .” Kojoe is also the 1st Japanese artist featured on two tracks on a majorfull-length Hip Hop compilation album, “ The Academy .” The official 1st single releasefeaturing Raekwon , Kojoe, and Kurup t was “Samurydas,” which became a “Pick of theWeek” in USA Today in September 2011.

Following The Great Disaster of March 11th, Kojoe became involved with Bond & Justice ofTohoku; an organization that feeds and cares for the residents of Fukushima and Sendai. Hehas been collecting video footage of the stricken areas, and performed at a show inFukushima. Kojoe has partnered with head wear distributor FAMES for an exclusive “Mitchell& Ness” KOJOE fitted cap, as well as KOJOE jeans by “Prohibit”, and a KOJOE T-shirt by“ROCKSMITH,” all in efforts to raise money for Bond & Justice. He has also contributed averse to the fundraising track “HOPE,” featuring Kreva, Seeda, Emi Maria, Tenzan, Lecca,and U.S. recording artist Karibell, on AVEX.

Striving to become known and respected in 2 markets simultaneously is a daunting task thatonly an artist with cultural diversity, reverence of history and social relations, and a relentlesswork ethic can accomplish. Kojoe is pioneering to lead a “New Jap City” of performers thatcan represent Japan on an international scale.

転校に転校を経て群馬県高崎市に小学校の時にたどり着く。
17歳の時に渡米を決意しNEWYORKへ渡った彼は、そこで本格的にリアルなストリートをラップで表現するようになった。BRONX そしてBROOKLYNのFLATBUSHに住んだ後QUEENSのHOLLISで落ち着く。ＵＳアンダーグラウンドを代表するヒップホップ・レーベル、 Rawkus Recordsが、「Rawkus 50」と題してアンダーグラウンドの新鋭アーティストを50組選出し、彼らのアルバムをデジタル配信で一挙リリース。そのプロジェクトにたった一人だけ抜擢された日本人でもある。その時のアルバムタイトルが「RAWNIN」。日本語と英語を巧みに絡ませFLOWするかと思えば歌も歌いまるで別人と間違える程ラッパーとは思えないスキルを持っている。日本のリスナーにとっては「待ってました！」と言う様な、今世紀最も重要なHIPHOP ARTISTである。

今回のアルバム「MIXEDIDENTITIES2.0」については国境関係なくブラジルやデンマークさらにフランスそして日本では般若のアルバムドクタートウキョウでお馴染みのJUMPOFF「チャレンジャー」feat.長淵剛をプロデュースした名古屋のTOMOKIYO from GRANDBEATZやあのOHLDも参加しておりバラエティーに富んでいる。ニューヨークはJ CARDIM、デトロイトからはD.FOCISと実力派のプロデューサーたちが参加している。過去にKOJOEは「今まで誰もしたことのないやり方で SEVEN SEASを繋げたい。」と言う強い気持ちがここからも窺えるのではないだろうか。
実はKOJOEこのアルバムで3曲自分でプロデュースしているのには目を見張る。MCサイドではあのTALIB KWELI が”NO IDEA”で参加。JARULEのアルバムBLOOD IN MY EYESでFEATUREされてるSAIKU720も参加。STREET, SOUL, POP, DRAMA, LIFE, STRUGGLE, PARTY, MESSAGE, LOVE, TRUTH, PAINなどとKOJOEの全てが詰め込まれてる一枚に仕上がっている上にまるで映画を見ている様な錯覚に陥る位ストーリー性に富んでいる。

混血であろうが純血であろうが、今世界中でアイデンティティーが複雑にMIXして毎日を生きる人たちがたくさんいるのが事実であろう。その中で KOJOE自身も日本で生まれて、人生の半分をアメリカと言う異国の地で育ちつい最近日本に帰国しカルチャーショックにまた刺激されている。
音/ON を通し言葉の壁を越え世界に声を届けるために戦い続けてきたKOJOEの日本での活動に期待される。実はKOJOEこのアルバムリリース前に二枚の MIXEDTAPE「MIXED IDENTITIES1.0」と「MIXED IDENTITIES1.5」をDROPを企んでいるとの噂がSTREETで流れているが、真実か否かお前の目で、そして耳で確かめろ！！

SAMURYDAS-Raekwon, Kojoe, & Kurupt 1st Release from “The Academy”

1st Single “Samurydas” ft. Kojoe, Raekwon, & Kurupt

The first Asian artist signed to Rawkus Records for his Japanese rhyming skills, while living in NYC, is now breaking international boundaries from Japan with bilingual lyricism. Kojoe of On Records (Nagoya), is focusing on lifting Japan’s veil off notable artists worthy of overseas accolades and rivalrous commercial appeal. Kojoe is established as the first Japanese artist to have a US single release to premier on a Hip Hop album featured with major recording artists such as Raekwon, Kurupt, Jadakiss, Pete Rock, Royce Da 5’9”, Redman, Method Man, Styles P, Crooked I, Keith Murray, Chino XL, Sean Price, Canibus, Planet Asia, Rass Kass and more. “Bodydown” from THE ACADEMY features Kojoe again, with Styles P and Jaecyn Bayne. The concept and hook of “Samurydas” was crafted and written by Kojoe, using an urban spin on the Japanese word “Samurai.” Acting as a cultural ambassador of Japan and Hip Hop, Kojoe’s personal music projects network rappers, singers, DJs, and producers around the globe. KOJOE は今年日本人初のUSシングルリリースの快挙を成し遂げた。楽曲の名前は「SAMURYDAS」しかもフューチャリングはRAEKWONとKURUPTで曲のコンセプトとサビはKOJOE自信が作曲し手掛けている。9月にユニバーサルから発売される予定の「The Academy」と言うコンピレーションアルバムのファーストシングルとして選ばれたこの曲だが、アルバム参加アーティスト勢が半端じゃない。 Raekwon を始めKurupt、 Jadakiss、Pete Rock、Royce Da 5’9″、 Redman、Method Man、Joell Ortiz、 Styles P、 Crooked I、 Keith Murray、 Chino XL、 Sean Price、Canibus、 Planet Asia、Rass Kassなどと総勢合わせて55名のUSラッパーが参加している。9割皆も知っているレジェンドばかり。この厚すぎる層の中でのシングル争奪戦を日本人作曲の曲が勝ち取った事実は日本HIPHOP歴史上最高の瞬間である。これからのKOJOEの動きが見逃せない。
